[9/8/2017: Due to high demand on our fire personnel this Fall, the Fall CERT Academy has been canceled. No replacement Academy has been scheduled at this time. The next regularly scheduled Academy will be in the Spring of 2018]
[8/1/17: Date of Final Drill, now Oct 21, revised from initial post.] The schedule for the Fall 2017 CERT training has been announced and is presented below. The CERT Academy teaches citizens basic emergency skills and educates them so that they can effectively respond to disasters as a part of a team. The program is modeled after the Los Angeles Fire Department’s program, which has been established in various communities nationwide. The program includes special training for basic fire suppression and medical care. Volunteers will also learn how to size-up search and rescue situations, such as a collapsed building, for example, to determine whether it is safe to go in. This Academy is open to Del Mar, Encinitas, Rancho Santa Fe, Solana Beach, and Elfin Forest residents. In addition to the classroom and practical training described in the schedule below, there are two additional requirements for completion of the CERT program and to be issued a CERT photo-ID Disaster Service Worker’s card: Successful completion of a Livescan background check. Wait until the academy starts and you get details from the instructor before starting this, but information can be found here. Completion of the FEMA online course IS-317, Introduction to CERT. Details at IS-317. You could start this before or during the academy, it covers the same material and would be excellent preparation. But do not complete the final exam more than two months before the academy final drill, or you will have to repeat it. [+] For current CERT members, verified participation in the final drill October 21st satisfies the DSW Renewal annual training requirement. Existing CERT members are always welcome at any of the sessions to refresh their skills.
