We hope we got your attention, and now you’re ready to do something about preparing for disaster. Where to begin getting yourself and your family out of the victim pool?

As a first step, download, read, and implement the two-page (distributed as one trifold sheet) Disaster Preparedness Guidelines (pdf) handout for the Are You Ready program, prepared by Encinitas CERT.

For more detail about recommended supplies and readiness practices, and perhaps all many will need, is the county readiness website at ReadySanDiego.

Start there to learn how to

  1. Make a plan.
  2. Get a kit.
  3. Stay informed.
  4. Get involved – For those interested and able, which will bring you back to CERT.

Some of the materials there are derived from those of FEMA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, customized as appropriate for the risks and conditions of our region. A lot of money and effort and thousands of years of accumulated disaster experience by professional responders have gone into preparing these guides for you, in a form you can use. Use them!

Note that the County Readiness site has two sister sites, reached by the tabs at the top of their web pages.

SDCounty Emergency provides real-time information on on the status of active regional threats. Note also the free SDEmergency smartphone app, which among other things allows you to track emergency status from your phone.

SDCounty Recovery has resources for medium and longer term issues of returning to normal after a disaster’s immediate danger is controlled.
